(1) A direct denial of the authority of the Word of God. This is the position of the destructive critic. The scholars of this school freely admit that the Bible plainly teaches the doctrines of our faith; but they avoid the force of the truth by refusing to accept the authority of the Word itself. (2) An indirect denial of the authority of the Scriptures, which poses as devout and believing; but stands free to empty words of their natural and obvious meaning. The latter is by far the more dangerous.
